I want to write a book or screenplay..how do i go about that?

i figure i should get somesorta software, but what else is involved?, i want to do this by myself, ive wanted to write since i was young, but i never did, now my lifes experiences are making my emotions burst out of me and i have no good outlet at the moment, i feel its a good time to start.
