What could happen if you use an operating installation disk that wasn't meant for your computer?

My computer originally had Windows Vista, but then I "got" Windows 7. And now I can't downgrade back to Vista, but I found my stepmom's Windows Vista installation disk that came with her laptop. I have a Gateway and she has Toshiba. Is there anything that could go wrong?
