What are the benefits to political polarization and religious polarization in a representative democracy?

Often we hear people raging at the crippling partisan politics that dominates the US, but can anyone think of what the benefits of it are? I'm interested to hear suggestions from you guys. This may quite possibly be similar to the benefits to uncritical, devoted religious belief.
